dtac position for 5G and some brief from seminar of Unlocked 5G, The Goal Yet to be Reached

Guess speaker – Mrs. Alexandra Reich, Chief Executive Officer, dtac Mrs. Alexandra Reich, Chief Executive Officer, Total Access Communication PLC (dtac) stated that mobile operator is committed to 5G development. We should launch 5G service in 2021. I am very excited that Thailand is setting up national 5G committee because the collaboration between industries and government agencies will be the key for 5G. Also, 5G will benefit B2B the most as evident in any commercialized countries. South Korea has been in trial process with the result of only 10% of consumers turning to 5G. The network coverage is still unstable. The current 5G developing movement is more for marketing purpose. Even in the United States and Europe, they are still in process to find the most benefit practical use cases for their perspectives. 5G enables better productivity and efficiency for every industry sectors. Individual consumers will still hesitate to pay higher fees for 5G service. Since the past, dtac has been proposing the collaboration between sectors as dtac believes 5G is going to benefit all sectors. Consequently, Thailand should develop the 5G roadmap but Thailand should not push 5G commercialization before the timeframe. Instead of  2020, dtac believes that  2021…

dtac CEO Alexandra Reich sees a future where creativity will matter more than productivity

dtac CEO Alexandra spoke at the Super Productive Talk on Sunday, Sep 22nd, making the case for a future that rewards creativity, willingness to fail and a mindset to never stop growing. Here is a transcript of her speech : "Sawadee ka. I’m amazed you felt the need to come today. You clearly are already the most Super Productive people in Bangkok. Tickets to this talk sold out in 10 minutes and yet you managed to get one. That’s impressive! Before we start, I’d like to be very honest with you. Frankly speaking, I’m very cautious when using the word ‘productive’. I don’t believe productivity is the metric you should be striving for. My belief—and I share this with a lot of people who are much smarter than I am—is that creativity and social skills is what will make you fit for an AI-driven future.   In my life, there are two young men who deeply influenced my thoughts on what we should all strive for. And before we get inspired by stories of Super Productivity, I want to tell you about their lives. One ended tragically despite a string of successes. Another went from a mountain in Nepal to…

How this dtac team is taking the long view on connectivity’s future

Even to dtac’s insiders, the company’s Strategy and Innovation Division can be something of an enigma. A multinational team comprising of Thai and 5 foreigners from Bangladesh, Myanmar, India, Germany and France with a large range of qualifications from ex- strategy consultants to sales, product or IT experts, its 30 people are spread across five teams. They all share a longer view on the telecommunications industry, be it when shaping the organization’s top-level strategy for 2020-21, discovering the hot new startups of tomorrow, or building the latest IoT solutions. We sat down with Thibaut Girard, who heads Strategy and Innovation at dtac, for a behind-the-scenes peek at the future of dtac in each of his teams. “Our role is to deliver on initiatives that require a lot of coordination across all of dtac and a longer timeframe to develop them,” said Mr. Girard. “Particularly if those projects don’t exactly fit within existing structures and need to be built up from scratch.” STRATEGY PLAYS Out of the five teams he leads, one is specifically dedicated to strategy. They work with colleagues from across the entire organization to shape dtac’s future ambitions, align network, sales, marketing strategies and ensure they are realized. “dtac…

How dtac’s sales force is adapting to the digital age

Technology has changed the way people buy things, and with it, consumer expectations have changed quite a bit. Traditional hard sales strategies that rely on pressure tactics or “buy more get more” pitches no longer work in the digital age. Today, we sit with two key figures in dtac’s Sales Group: Akkapong Linpaisan, Head of Branded Sales Division and Buranis Mosqua, the newly appointed head of Partner and Hybrid Channels Division. How is dtac adapting itself to the digital era? Buranis: The sales landscape is constantly changing, fueled by the emergence of digital channels. Traditionally, the more-for-more proposition worked effectively, but it’s no longer the case. It’s just not enough to allow customers to make a purchase decision. The reality is that many people perceive that the telco industry lacks excitement and is no longer sexy. In fact, telcos are an important enabler of economic activity, accelerator of innovation and they establish markets for new products and services for the future. What is the role of physical retail in this new digital landscape? Akkapong: Sales persons need a lot of skill to be able to provide good experiences from the customer’s first touchpoint to after-sales service. Telcos are considered a service…

dtac bets on agile to discover a better way of work

dtac has set up a group of Agile Frontrunners, eight pilot teams exploring a new way of work, agile, which allows individuals to be more empowered, launch new products and services faster and better understand customers. We spoke to one of the three "tribe leaders," Mr. Panthep Nilasinthop, dtac's Head of Digital Services and Sales. He shares how even in the very early stages of agile, he can feel a deep change in the team's energy, enthusiasm and passion. What’s Agile? And why did dtac embrace this method? Conventionally, corporations set up a range of departments across different locations. This commonly leads to working in silos. But the concept of agile working is totally different. It brings experts from each field to work together. By this way, they can share ideas cross-functionally and effectively create products and services . At dtac, we started setting up “Agile Frontrunners," which consist of three tribes divided into eight squads, with a primary focus on improving customer experience. For example, the prepaid base acquisition tribe is responsible for new customers who have never subscribed to dtac services. The postpaid based management tribe oversees product and services enhancement for the existing customers. And the digital…

We ask dtac’s new Chief Marketing Officer how dtac will get back to growth

“There’re a lot of opportunities to gain more market share both in the prepaid and postpaid markers. This will bring dtac back growth,” says dtac's chief marketing officer, How Lih Ren, who joined the company on April 1, 2019. Having worked at consulting firms and Malaysian mobile operator Digi, Mr. How (who also hails from Malaysia) has an extensive experience in corporate strategy, product development, portfolio project management, consumer sales and digital product portfolios. He joined dtac at a difficult time, as the operator’s market share has slipped from second to third and subscribers dropped from 24.3 million in 2017 to 20.7 million in early 2019. Despite this, the newly appointed CMO outlines that “there are a lot of opportunities that dtac never tapped into.”Thai smartphone users are heavy data users, consuming 11 GB of mobile data per month on average, while smartphone penetration is close to 82 percent. They rank among the world’s heaviest Facebook users, too.   “This clearly demonstrates that mobile internet is a big part of Thais’ everyday life, similarly to Malaysia where I came from,” says Mr. How. Despite this heavy usage, he sees gaps in Thai mobile consumption that need to be filled. “A huge…

dtac acquires 700 MHz to grow its coverage and 5G spectrum

Independent research companies are starting to recognize the effects of dtac's rapid network and spectrum expansion. With far more spectrum per customer than its competitors, dtac has also added 20,000 sites in the past 12 months to make good use of its wide bandwidth. In its commitment to never stop improving, dtac further acquired a 2x10 MHz block of spectrum in the 700 MHz frequency last June. Prathet Tankuranun, Chief Technology Officer at dtac, explains the significance of this new spectrum acquisition: "“With dtac's spectrum portfolio of 110 MHz, dtac was already a leader in high-band. But we only had 2x5 MHz of low band spectrum on 900 MHz. Low-band is important for indoor coverage and rural areas. With the recent acquisition of 700 MHz allocated by the Nation Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), we are now ready to compete on coverage, too.” A path toward 5G Internationally, many countries allocate 700 MHz spectrum for the use of telecom services, while Thailand previously allocated 700 MHz for broadcast services. However, the NBTC recently recategorised the use of 700 MHz telecom services to comply with international standards. dtac plans to use 700 MHz to provide 4G and 5G services through the…

System Stone, a smart factory solution from dtac accelerate Batch 7, secures Pre-Series A funding from Expara Thailand

10 June ,2019 - System Stone, Thailand’s leading Industrial Tech startup, closed their Pre-Series A funding round with Expara (Thailand), a Southeast-Asia focused VC currently managing the SMEs Private Equity Trust Fund for Government Saving Bank (GSB) and The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET). System Stone plans to use this funding to increase market share in the domestic market, with the aim to be the No.1 machine maintenance platform in Thailand. They are also preparing for overseas expansion and are currently developing advanced IoT solutions for manufacturers. According to Sittikorn Nualrod, CEO and Co-Founder of the company, Industry 4.0 trend was the main push for global manufacturers to transform the current workflow. “System Stone began when the new trend created challenges for traditional businesses to digitize their factories. Manufacturers began to look for solutions that will help them differentiate from competitors and change the perception that people had of them. We were able to use our expertise and develop a mobile application which aided engineers in their current workflow. The platform enables them to work faster, easier and at the same time reduces total operational costs for maintenance as well as capital injection.  There are still many opportunities in this…

How partnerships work in the collaboration era of digital transformation

“Two heads are better than one” is a proverb that underscores the importance of collaboration. When it comes to business, partnerships are becoming increasingly important in the digital economy, as business models evolve and product innovations demand expertise from other industries. We speak to Pipat Srimattakul, Head of Partnership at dtac and his team  on how dtac is working on this opportunity: "Under a traditional prospect of partnership, we would o a more horizontal integration by partnering with over-the-top (OTT) service providers and designing a variety of bundle offers. However, digital transformation is putting the telcos industry in a more complex and challenging situation. The emergence of cutting-edge technologies like 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to reshape the industry landscape, which drives us to be prepared in the future holistically as a digital ecosystem," he said. “The rapid evolution of technologies causes a different means of consumer competition. We will see various forms of partnership strategy across the industries, not just telecoms." This is why digital partnership team has been reorganized under the Business Group. The responsibilities of Partnership team can be divided into three areas: First is centralizing partnership where dtac has already joined forces, which allows us to…
